Stamicarbon delivers its first NX Stami™ Green Ammonia converter for EU-funded INITIATE project

Stamicarbon delivers its first NX Stami™ Green Ammonia converter for the EU-funded INITIATE project. The converter is the core equipment for the demo plant in Luleå, Sweden. It was designed by Stamicarbon to produce up to 5 MTPD of ammonia from syngas recovered from off-gases generated by a steel mill.

The unique design of the NX Stami™ Green Ammonia converter incorporates the capability to deal with the intermittency of feedstock from steel mill off-gases and on-site hydrogen produced by electrolysis. This technology opens the door to alternative feedstocks such as petrochemical hydrocarbon off-gases, waste, and biomass. In addition, it can provide feedstock for methanol and sustainable aviation fuel.

About INITIATE

The INITIATE Project (Innovative Industrial Transformation of the steel and chemical industries of Europe) will investigate and develop the potential of industrial symbiosis to convert residual steel gas emissions into resources for urea production. The core of this process is a modular carbon-capture utilization-and-storage technology, integrating the flexible conditioning of time dependent and carbon-rich steel gases with the synthesis of ammonia. Throughout the project, these innovative technologies and their optimal integrated operations will be proven in real industrial settings at the facilities of Swerim in Luleå, Sweden, advancing to the technology readiness level.
